Diane Desierto (Philippine Correspondent)

Diane Desierto is an Assistant Professor of Law at the Peking University School of Transnational Law. Her teaching and publication areas are in international economic law (international investment, trade, finance, law and development), international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and international dispute settlement. She holds a J.S.D. and L.L.M. from Yale Law School, where she was Howard M. Holtzmann Fellow in International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution, Lillian Goldman Perpetual Scholar, and Editor at the Yale Journal of International Law. She also holds a J.D. cum laude class salutatorian degree and B.Sc. Economics summa cum laude class valedictorian degree from the University of the Philippines. She has published articles in her research areas with Columbia Journal of Transnational Law, Yale Journal of International Law, NYU Journal of International Law & Politics, Berkeley Journal of International Law, Transnational Dispute Management, George Washington International Law Review, University of Pennsylvania Journal of International Law, Manchester Journal of International Economic Law, Trade Law & Development, among others, as well as book chapters with Cambridge University Press, Edward Elgar Publishers, IGI Global, and Duncker-Humblot, Berlin. Dr. Desierto authored the book Necessity and National Emergency Clauses: Sovereignty in Modern Treaty Interpretation (Martinus Nijhoff Publishers, 2012), which received the Ambrose Gherini Prize in International Law at Yale Law School, and also authored a forthcoming monograph with Cambridge University Press (2013) on ASEAN integration and treaties in the Philippine constitutional system. From 2010-2011, Dr. Desierto clerked at the International Court of Justice for then Judge Bruno Simma and the current Vice-President, H.E. Judge Bernardo Sepulveda-Amor. She was Shearman and Sterling Scholar and Runner-Up Laureate of the Academie du droit de l'arbitrage in Paris, France (2011), Grotius Fellow at the Center for Comparative Law and International Law at the University of Michigan Law School (2012), and Postgraduate Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Germany (2008 and 2013).

As part of its centennial celebration, the University of the Philippines College of Law hosted the Manila Biennial Conference of the Asian Society of Labour Law (AsianSLL), on November 20-21, 2010 at the Malcolm Hall, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. With the theme International Labour Standards and the Need for a Paradigm Shift, the two-day's international conference had the following four thematic sessions: (1) Labour Standards and Atypical Workers; (2) Child Labour; (3) ICMW and ILO Conventions on Migrant Workers; and (4) Occupational Health and Safety.
  2. The University of the Philippines College of Law Faculty members have faced a show cause order from the Supreme Court of the Philippines arising from a faculty statement calling for reforms and resignation on account of plagiarism in a decision of the Court. They are preparing the defense and mobilizing support locally and internationally.
